How will you present your family history?
You’ve done the research and built a paper mountain, but how are you going to use all that material to write up your family history?
I have just prepared a new fact sheet on this topic with a range of ideas for you to consider.
The mega life-time work of a fully documented family history book, or the setting up a website or weekly blog may sound daunting.
So why not look at creating a family history scrapbook, or compiling a personal memory book of your childhood (your grandparents, holidays, meals, fashions, school days, entertainment, first job etc. etc.)
Why not write a series of short articles of “Stories from My Family History”, inspired by your research. We all have characters amongst our ancestors who appeal more than others and have a colourful background, such as A Feisty Female, A Black Sheep, A Self-Made Man, or a Tragic Tale.
The Fact Sheet also gives some tips on quoting your sources, dealing with apocryphal family anecdotes (“we are descended from the Dukes of….. “) and keeping the right side of the copyright regulations.
Contact us on archives@scotborders.gov.uk and we will e-mail you a copy of the Fact Sheet.
So start writing and share your reserch with others!
