Archives and Olympics – starting local, thinking global

Border sporting greats of yesteryears are about to enter the arena once more, only this time in the form of an education resource.
We’re currently busy developing a pack of archive newspaper reports to support schools delivering sport-themed projects in this Olympic year.
Via David Ferguson, chief rugby writer, The Scotsman, we were able to track down Henry Gray, manager of Eyemouth leisure centre, trainer of Guy Learmonth (one of Scottish athletics’ most promising talents and a Flames Ambassador for this year’s London Olympics) and a well-respected local sports historian.
Henry, of the Borders Sport and Leisure Trust, has kindly agreed to make available to us some of his expertise and research on Scottish Borderers who have represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games.
This novel collaboration illustrates the potential for small, informal partnerships to make a big difference to young people’s learning.
The archives pack will contain items not easily obtainable elsewhere and aims to help schools add an exciting local dimension to their Olympics studies.
The resources pack will be available to local schools in the near future…watch this space!
We greatly appreciate Henry’s help in this exciting project!
