Walkerburn Mills

Recently, we spent a highly productive and enjoyable morning working on a project with a colleague from Arts Development.

They are developing a programme, which uses traditional song and other active learning approaches to bring to life Walkerburn’s industrial heritage for young people in the local primary school (P1 to 3 & P4 to 7 classes).

As we hold the Ballantyne (Walkerburn Mills) Collection, we were able to provide lots of useful background information for the project and the discussion covered topics as wide-ranging as waterpower, child factory workers, woolmarks, mill chimneys and many, many more! Our colleagues at Borders Textile Towerhouse also kindly helped, by providing input on the sounds of the mills.

And, we are likely to be involved in at least two of the project’s teaching sessions as our archive material contains a wealth of interesting stories that will add another dimension to the children’s learning.

Partnership working comes to the fore once more and we’re excited to be involved in this valuable project!
