The Purest Pleasure - Archives!
Over a lunchtime reading the newspaper I came accross one of the best quotes about archives from a researcher:
‘The purest pleasure in any historian’s working life comes from a discovery in the archives: nothing compares to the sensation that, as you read through an old document, old certainties are liquefying, and new truths about the past are taking shape.’
What a great quote! The article is about research done on the history of the mafia and mentions that in the past access has been difficult with the reply to requests for access refused with the addition - ‘For you own safety. And ours.’
