All aboard for the emigration exhibition

Earlier this year there was a series of posts about the Heritage Hub’s emigration project with Kirkhope, Ettrick and Yarrow primary schools.  Now the pupils’ work is on display at the Heritage Hub alongside the orginal archives documents, in an exhibition all about emigration from the Scottish Borders in the 19th century.  The exhibition tells the stories of four sets of emigrants who left for the new world - why did they emigrate?  What were their lives like here?  What was the journey like?  And what happened to them?

Emigrants’ cabin trunk: a contemporary newspaper article advised emigrants to take their belongings in a carpet bag, as the trunks most emigrants favoured would cause them storage problems on arrival.  But it was not a good idea to travel too lightly - emigrants were also advised to take extra food to liven up ships’ rations!

The exhibition launch: pupils, teachers and parents came to see their emigration animation films on shown on the big screen in Tower Mill, and then came across to the Hub for the exhibition and some ships’ provisions.  The films are now showing on the screens in Beanscene and the Heritage Hub.

The exhibition will be showing throughout the summer.
